Most types of industry use drafters who can translate ideas, sketches and specifications of an engineer, architect or disigner into complete and accurate working plans needed to make any product, engineered project or structure. Computer aided design (CAD) and drafting technology is helping architects and designers create with computers and software. CAD also shortens the time it takes to create blueprints and layouts and makes building a home or product that much more efficient.
An education in CAD drafting and design technology typically includes the completion of specialized engineering courses at an accredited school, college, or university. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, has more detailed information on an education or certification in CAD drafting and design technology. Graduates may begin their careers in a variety of entry-level positions in various fields involving drafting and design, some of which include mechanical, piping, architectural and construction drafting, civil drafting, interior design, illustration and design detailing. Job growth for drafters is estimated to be below average until 2012, mainly because the lines between a drafter, architect, and designer are starting to become blurred. A drafter in today's economy can expect to make between $30,000 and $45,000 a year.
